Hadas Midbari writes for No Camels&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." Based on that definition, two Israeli doctors, Dr. Dina Eisen and Dr. Lilach Meltski, have developed a system called "Synapsot," or otherwise "Optimistic Health Promotion," that encouraged patients to be healthy by being happy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"It's really not much more complicated than that," say the doctors.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The origin of the word synapse comes from ancient Greek and means "to join together." The plural of synapse in Hebrew is Synapsot. Synapses are the points where two nerve ends meet, and where a message is passed along.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Synapses are therefore the connecting points in the brain between the outer reality and the inner perception. Our thoughts define what we feel about what is actually happening. We are able to give personal meaning and choose particular reactions to outside events as they occur. Our thought processes activate synapses that give us either happiness or sadness. And this reaction will not only affect our emotional well-being, say the Synapsot founders, but our physical health. According to Dr. Eisen, new synapses can be produced throughout life. The human brain is flexible and can produce "optimistic synapses" by learning and repeating actions, thoughts or words: "We found a way to create the exact chemical reaction in the brain generally induced by different types of pills, only in a natural way, using the system already existing in our bodies," Eisen told NoCamels. "It is the synapses activation that makes us either happy or sad."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Eisen's method is based on years of medical research worldwide. Two of the main studies have shown that a larger amount of Serotonin is being released into the synapses in the brain when a person smiles or says "thank you," explained Eisen. Serotonin release is a chemical reaction known to make people happier and is often used in anti-depression pills.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Eisen says that laughter and humor are also proven to be making people healthier. One of the studies that influenced Synapsot was a research with more than 800 male subjects with heart disease. The study showed that the happier and more optimistic men had 20 percent more chances of staying alive than the pessimistic ones.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To help people understand how to encourage happy thoughts, Synapsot created what they call a toolbox for optimistic health on their website. There readers can find articles on health and preventive medicine, the principles of optimistic health and links to books and additional sites.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Dr. Eisen also wrote her top five tips for optimistic health promotion, exclusively for NoCamels:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1.  Hug a person at least 4 times a day – studies show that a warm touch with another person has positive physical effects on both the giver and receiver.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2.  Say Thank you even for the smallest things – it's proven to be making new synapses connections in your brain as well as improving your attention skills.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3.  Keep in close touch with your friends – people who have been through heart attacks are 40 percent less likely to suffer another when they have a close circle of friends.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;4. Eat cashew nuts, avocado, whole wheats, sweat potato and spinach – they increase the level of serotonin in your brain.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;5. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.—That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.—That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it; and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shown, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world. He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good. He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them. He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only. He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures. He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people. He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within. He has endeavored to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migration hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands. He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers. He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries. He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people, and eat out their substance. He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures. He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power. He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their acts of pretended legislation: For Quartering large bodies of armed troops among us: For protecting them, by a mock Trial, from punishment for any murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States: For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world: For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent: For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury: For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences: For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies: For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments: For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever. He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us. He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the Lives of our people. He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to complete the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty &amp; perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation. He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands. He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions. In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free People. Nor have We been wanting in attention to our British brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. Actually, I wonder how many kids in school today are taught how  important this battle was to the success of the War of  Independence.&lt;/FONT&gt;&lt;/STRONG&gt;&lt;/DIV&gt; &lt;DIV&gt;&lt;FONT size=3&gt;&lt;/FONT&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/DIV&gt; &lt;DIV&gt;&lt;STRONG&gt;&lt;FONT size=3&gt;Lets spend a few minutes and revisit this  event........&lt;/FONT&gt;&lt;/STRONG&gt;&lt;/DIV&gt; &lt;DIV&gt;&lt;FONT size=3&gt;&lt;/FONT&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/DIV&gt; &lt;DIV&gt;&lt;STRONG&gt;&lt;FONT size=3&gt;The war had been going badly for the Americans. Since  the British captured New York City in the summer, the American army had lost  every battle and finally had crossed the Delaware near Philadelphia. What a  disaster it had been. Not only the defeats, but the Hessians had been brutal  with any wounded or&amp;nbsp;prisoners taken. Actually the saying, Take no  prisoners" could well apply here.&lt;/FONT&gt;&lt;/STRONG&gt;&lt;/DIV&gt; &lt;DIV&gt;&lt;FONT size=3&gt;&lt;/FONT&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/DIV&gt; &lt;DIV&gt;&lt;STRONG&gt;&lt;FONT size=3&gt;At Valley Forge Washington's army was down to around  7,000 men,but many of them were not fit for duty. Most were without proper  clothing and food was scarce. Civilians who cheered&amp;nbsp;and showered them with  food and gifts as they marched to defend New York City now avoided them. In fact  thousands of Americans had renounced the Revolution and renewed their pledge of  allegiance to King George III. As for the army, desertions were occurring every  day and most of the enlistments would expire at the end of the  month.&lt;/FONT&gt;&lt;/STRONG&gt;&lt;/DIV&gt; &lt;DIV&gt;&lt;FONT size=3&gt;&lt;/FONT&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/DIV&gt; &lt;DIV&gt;&lt;STRONG&gt;&lt;FONT size=3&gt;The Continental Congress was&amp;nbsp;moving  from&amp;nbsp;Philadelphia to Baltimore&amp;nbsp;and&amp;nbsp;there was now talk that  Washington was not up to the job. Washington and his council of Generals  recognized that something&amp;nbsp;desperate had to be done. They arrived at a plan  to seize the initiative, concentrate forces, strike hard and withdraw quickly.  The password for this attack was "Victory or Death".&lt;/FONT&gt;&lt;/STRONG&gt;&lt;/DIV&gt; &lt;DIV&gt;&lt;FONT size=3&gt;&lt;/FONT&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/DIV&gt; &lt;DIV&gt;&lt;STRONG&gt;&lt;FONT size=3&gt;So around midnight on December 25th, in the middle of  a howling&amp;nbsp;storm, Washington led his troops across the Delaware River to  strike at the Hessians camped&amp;nbsp;in Trenton.&amp;nbsp;Unknown to Washington,  because of the weather,&amp;nbsp;two of his generals had called off their troops  from participating&amp;nbsp;in the&amp;nbsp;battle plan to attack&amp;nbsp;Trenton&amp;nbsp;from  different directions.&lt;/FONT&gt;&lt;/STRONG&gt;&lt;/DIV&gt; &lt;DIV&gt;&lt;FONT size=3&gt;&lt;/FONT&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/DIV&gt; &lt;DIV&gt;&lt;STRONG&gt;&lt;FONT size=3&gt;Incidentally, the British in Brunswick (twenty-five  miles from Trenton) had received certain intelligence that the Americans planned  to attack Trenton. They conveyed this to the Commander of the Hessians on  Christmas Day, but he concluded that with the weather this bad, nothing would  happen for the present.&lt;/FONT&gt;&lt;/STRONG&gt;&lt;/DIV&gt; &lt;DIV&gt;&lt;FONT size=3&gt;&lt;/FONT&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/DIV&gt; &lt;DIV&gt;&lt;STRONG&gt;&lt;FONT size=3&gt;Around 8:00 AM on December 26th&amp;nbsp;the American army  of 2,400 men&amp;nbsp;attacked. The Hessians were routed. More than 900 were killed,  wounded, or captured. The remainder of the Hessians had escaped to Brunswick  because the planned encirclement of Trenton was not possible due to the aborting  of the attack by two generals. The entire battle lasted 45  minutes.&lt;/FONT&gt;&lt;/STRONG&gt;&lt;/DIV&gt; &lt;DIV&gt;&lt;FONT size=3&gt;&lt;/FONT&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/DIV&gt; &lt;DIV&gt;&lt;STRONG&gt;&lt;FONT size=3&gt;Washington allowed the Hessians officers to retain  their swords and instructed his men to treat the wounded and prisoners  fairly.&lt;/FONT&gt;&lt;/STRONG&gt;&lt;/DIV&gt; &lt;DIV&gt;&lt;STRONG&gt;&lt;FONT size=3&gt;It is reputed that when the Hessian officer, who  succeeded the Commanding Officer who was fatally wounded, thanked Washington for  the mercy shown his troops, Washington replied something like, "We do not fight  for glory. We fight for our liberty, our freedom as free men." This was said to  a Hessian officer who was present when his troops committed atrocities in the  fighting around New York City.&lt;/FONT&gt;&lt;/STRONG&gt;&lt;/DIV&gt; &lt;DIV&gt;&lt;FONT size=3&gt;&lt;/FONT&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/DIV&gt; &lt;DIV&gt;&lt;STRONG&gt;&lt;FONT size=3&gt;The American army then retired across the Delaware  River before the British&amp;nbsp;could arrive from Brunswick.&lt;/FONT&gt;&lt;/STRONG&gt;&lt;/DIV&gt; &lt;DIV&gt;&lt;FONT size=3&gt;&lt;/FONT&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/DIV&gt; &lt;DIV&gt;&lt;STRONG&gt;&lt;FONT size=3&gt;This battle did not win the war,but it turned the tide  of opinion, both in America and Europe.....especially Britain and  France.&lt;/FONT&gt;&lt;/STRONG&gt;&lt;/DIV&gt; &lt;DIV&gt;&lt;FONT size=3&gt;&lt;/FONT&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/DIV&gt; &lt;DIV&gt;&lt;STRONG&gt;&lt;FONT size=3&gt;Just days before this battle Thomas Paine published  his paper &lt;U&gt;The American Crisis&lt;/U&gt;
